The CDS 1 2027 application form will be released by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on December 16, 2026, at upsc.gov.in. Eligible candidates can submit their online applications until January 5, 2027, to apply for IMA, INA, AFA, and OTA courses commencing in 2028.

What is the Exam?

The Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination is a national-level competitive exam conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It serves as the gateway for graduates aspiring to join the Indian Armed Forces as commissioned officers in the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA), and Officers Training Academy (OTA).

At ExamBhai, we have tracked defence exam trends over the past decade. The CDS exam tests candidates across general knowledge, English, and elementary mathematics. Successful candidates in the written examination are called for the Service Selection Board (SSB) interview, followed by comprehensive medical tests.

Joining the armed forces through CDS is one of the most prestigious routes for male and female graduates in India. While IMA, INA, and AFA train cadets for Permanent Commission, OTA trains candidates for Short Service Commission (SSC).
